Two new books about people who are addicted to casino gambling have recently been released. The timing of these books could not be more ideal, as the populations of many of the world’s counties have of late developed an acute fixation with casino gambling, particularly poker.
Each of the books deals with its author’s own love- hate affair with casino gambling. Six to Five Against, by Burt Dragin, traces the history of gambling in the United States, from colonial times to the current era of Las Vegas. He also explores the psychological, physiological, and social roots of compulsive gambling.
Dragin wrote the book in an attempt to understand his own compulsion toward casino gambling. He concluded that that those who are addicted to casino gambling or other gaming forms exhibit classic ‘impulse control’ problems.
The second recently published book on casino gambling, Born to Lose, is by Bill Lee, an American of Chinese ancestry. In his new book, Lee traces his family’s, and his own, problems with gambling. He begins with his grandfather in China, who sold Lees father to pay a gambling debt, and continues to his own struggles with a gambling addiction.
